My goal is to share my experiences about the process of becoming a clinical social worker. I will also be including various posts on helpful career resources as well as interviews with social workers and psychologists working in different areas of mental health.

Beginning of 2nd Year Internship
This week I had the first full week of my second year internship (or placement) at the outpatient mental health clinic at a New York hospital.
On the first day, the social work department provided an orientation for all the interns in which they provided some background information about the hospital and the different functions that social workers provide within it. They discussed some hospital rules and also mentioned that they would be providing a weekly social work training seminar. They also took us on a tour of the hospital. After that, we had a lunch break and went to our respective departments to meet with our supervisors.
There were, of course, more forms to fill out on my floor... but this time they were for getting computer access, a lab coat, keys etc.
On the second day, I had the opportunity to observe patient intakes as well as partake in a group session. Yesterday (my third day), I observed my supervisor conducting a session, conducted my first session with a patient, and participated in a second group session.
I should add that in addition to all of the above, I was spending a lot of time with my supervisor who was providing me with lots of guidance and informal supervision.
All in all, I think I am going to be totally thrilled working there :) My supervisor is someone who is not only very experienced and knowledgeable but she also enjoys teaching. She is also very kind, warm and encouraging. I already am feeling very blessed with having Dr S as my supervisor.
As always, please feel free to share your thoughts and comments. I really appreciate them!

Sounds like a terrific start, Dorlee. It's always a good sign when you have your first session with a client in your first week--it usually means the internship will really give you plenty of opportunities.
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of group was it? Will you be facilitating any groups?
Thanks, Nancy - Yes, I am most grateful :)
ReplyDeleteOne group was an all men's group and one group was an all women's group that meet on a biweekly basis. There are three other groups that I will be partaking in next week that also meet every other week. They are all supportive type of groups.
My current role will be to co-facilitate them and later to occasionally serve as a leader in my supervisor's absence.
I would also have the opportunity down the road to run a psycho-educational group of my own on a topic of my choosing.
Hi Dorlee! Thanks for sharing with us your first full week of internship. It's great to read the details of your experience, and (of course) my favorite sentence is "All in all, I think I am going to be totally thrilled working there :)" Wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteHi Deb,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing in my happiness over my current placement!
Your support and encouragement are most appreciated :)
Best,
Dorlee
