Embarking on a New Career

Iceland - Thingvellir 25a

To give a brief introduction, I have an MBA in marketing and worked in the marketing field for about ten years. I’m now in the middle of a career transition. To that end, I am now working on pursuing a Masters in Social Work (MSW).

There were a number of reasons I chose the pursuit of an MSW over a Masters degree in Psychology. The primary advantages that I saw in MSW programs are the type of practical training one obtains from the start in the field (working in a “placement” or agency as an intern) and the employment of a systems approach in which the family and environment are included and looked at as part of the whole picture impacting an individual's life.

Prior to making the official choice to enter the field of social work, I first took a few classes as a non-matriculated student over this past Spring and Summer. The classes I took were in Human Behavior, Social Policy and Ethnocultural Issues; they were all very interesting and I couldn’t wait to be fully matriculated in an MSW program.

To make sure that I keep any information shared confidential, I will not disclose the name of the school that I am attending nor will I give the name of the agency where I will be working for my placement nor any information that can be linked or identified with any person.

That said, I plan to share some of my experiences of going through a Masters of Social Work program. At the moment, I am one of a handful of students left in my class who has not yet been assigned to a placement but expect to be assigned to one any day now. The majority of students have started the first day of their first year placements yesterday.

Am I a little nervous about not having been assigned to a placement yet? Yes...but I’ve decided to just accept it, because what else can I do?
